The Battle for Gullywith by Susan Hill

Susan Hill was born in Scarborough, the seaside resort on the North East coast of Yorkshire, in 1942. She can turn her hand to everything. She's well known for her novels and elegant short stories for adults. Books like “I'm the King of the Castle”, “The Woman in Black” are some of her impressive and wonderful creations.

“The Battle for Gullywith” is her latest release in which the mysteries and magic things that go around an enchanted castle is expressed in a thrilling fashion. The storyline begins with the main character, Oliver Brown, in short known as Olly who along with his family was moving from the luxurious Londonhome to Gullywith, an old farmhouse in the northern countryside. Initially his family was anxious to stay in their new home but soon lose their love for it as strange things happen day by day. The roof falls down, the barley unit collapses and the whole building is always cold and damp. Oliver’s mother is worried that they will never turn the chilly farmhouse into a family home.

In Gullywith, Small spiteful stones with strange markings scratched on them appear in odd places. Oliver meets a local girl called KK, a brave, resourceful, and slightly mysterious girl. She leads him to the home of Nonny Dreever- the one person who might be able to help Olly find out what the mysterious stones are.

Nonny Dreever who lives in a house on stilts, full of strange things like a Christmas tree, looks at the mysterious angry stones and tells Olly to put them back where they once came from -- to Withern Mere. This take Olly to make a dangerous journey where he will encounter a Stone King, discover the mysteries contained within the covers of a magical book, and attend a Midwinter Revel deep within Withern Hill.

As the story moves, referring Ice caves, brave tortoises, a great Castle rising from the Mere and the Stone Army which is determined to fight to the end to get Gullywith back, Olly grabs the attention of the readers and make them to involve deeply into the story book by displaying the illustrations of the weird and mysterious environments.
